• New Americans

Technology for Tomorrow is proud of serving the New American community in close collaboration with the U. S Committee on Refugees & Immigrants (USCRI) and Age Well. We provide a variety of technology training opportunities to adult New Americans such as Digital Citizenship, Internet Safety, cell phone use, typing, Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides), and much more. Over the years, we have provided training sessions for New Americans at a variety of locations such as King Street Center, Hunt Middle School, Sustainability Academy, USCRI, Champlain Senior Activity Center, Champlain Mill, Winooski Memorial Library, and more.

Each year, many New Americans arrive in Vermont. Among their immediate needs are learning English, finding a job, and resuming their own and their children’s education. Technology for Tomorrow (T4T), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Williston, VT, provides valuable assistance for these and many other needs they encounter once they arrive in Vermont. We do this in collaboration with our partner the United States Committee on Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI). A fundamental building block for New Americans’ success is learning one or more types of basic technology:

  • Learning English is done using T4T’s mobile computer lab that helps volunteer instructors teach using typing, which also introduces basic typing skills for later courses.
  • T4T teaches a number of technology classes, from very basic instruction, to learning what it means to safely become a “digital citizen,” to more complex subjects like the Google Suite and the opportunity for industry certification. This allows students to better align with job requirements and also to grow professionally.
  • Providing similar training to New American children of all ages helps them more quickly and easily enter local school systems and utilize computers where necessary to stay current.

Empowering New Americans: The Vital Role of Technology and Digital Education

In today’s interconnected world, technology and digital education have become essential tools for empowerment, growth, and integration. This is particularly true for individuals with a refugee background who have resettled in a new country, such as the United States. For these new Americans, technology and digital education offer invaluable opportunities (as listed below) to bridge the gap, adapt to their new environment, and build a prosperous future.

  1. Access to Information and Resources: Technology and digital education provide new Americans with access to a vast array of information and resources. With the internet at their fingertips, they can learn about local services, educational opportunities, healthcare resources, and legal rights. Online platforms and websites offer language learning resources, job portals, and cultural integration programs, enabling refugees to navigate their new surroundings with greater ease and independence.
  2. Language Acquisition and Communication: Language barriers can be significant challenges for new Americans. However, technology offers a range of language learning tools, interactive apps, and online courses that facilitate language acquisition and communication. Through these resources, refugees can develop their language skills, engage in conversations, and connect with the broader community. Digital platforms also provide avenues for practicing language skills through virtual language exchange programs or engaging with language learning communities.
  3. Education and Skill Development: Digital education plays a transformative role in empowering new Americans with refugee backgrounds through formal and informal learning opportunities. Online courses, educational platforms, and e-learning resources offer flexible options for individuals to pursue higher education, vocational training, or skill development. These avenues enable refugees to enhance their qualifications, gain new knowledge, and improve their employability prospects.
  4. Economic Empowerment: Technology and digital education open doors to economic opportunities for new Americans. With access to digital platforms, refugees can explore remote work options, freelancing opportunities, and entrepreneurship. Online marketplaces and platforms provide avenues to showcase skills, connect with clients, and generate income. Digital literacy equips refugees with the skills needed to navigate job search engines, create professional resumes, and utilize online networking platforms, enhancing their prospects for employment and financial independence.
  5. Social Integration and Cultural Connection: Technology acts as a bridge for social integration and cultural connection for new Americans. Social media platforms, online communities, and virtual forums offer spaces for refugees to connect with others who share similar experiences, exchange cultural insights, and build supportive networks. Through digital channels, new Americans can engage with their local communities, participate in cultural events, and foster cross-cultural understanding.
  6. Empowering Resilience and Well-being: For refugees who have experienced trauma and displacement, technology can serve as a means of empowerment, self-expression, and healing. Creative outlets such as blogging, vlogging, and storytelling enable individuals to share their stories, express their emotions, and raise awareness about their experiences. Digital tools can also provide access to mental health resources, counseling services, and support networks, promoting overall well-being and resilience.

Technology and digital education have transformative potential for new Americans with a refugee background, empowering them to overcome challenges, adapt to their new environment, and thrive in their adopted country. By providing access to information, language acquisition, educational opportunities, economic empowerment, social integration, and well-being support, technology bridges gaps and opens doors for these individuals. As we embrace the digital age, it is crucial to ensure that all new Americans, regardless of their backgrounds, have equal opportunities to access and leverage technology and digital education, thereby fostering their successful integration and contributing to the rich fabric of society.
