In the ever-evolving AI landscape, bridging the digital divide is more crucial than ever. Technology for Tomorrow (T4T), a Vermont-based nonprofit, has been at the forefront of this mission, empowering individuals and organizations through digital skills training. Our journey has been significantly bolstered by our participation in the Microsoft TechSpark Fellows Program.
A Partnership for Progress
Since 2023, Microsoft has invited the organization to be a TechSpark Fellow. This collaboration is transformative, enabling T4T to expand our reach and impact. Our mission to bridge the digital divide is realized through in-person and virtual learning programs, provided in collaboration with local and national nonprofit partners. These programs serve under-resourced populations, including older adults, recent immigrants (including those with refugee status), and unemployed individuals.
Impact in Numbers
The data speaks volumes about the success of our partnership with Microsoft and as Microsoft TechSpark fellow. In 2024 alone, T4T provided classes, courses, and webinars on the Microsoft Suite and AI tools to:
- 450 learners in public classes in Vermont;
- 117 learners in multiple states through a partnership with Vermont Associates for Training & Development (A4TD);
- 3,037 learners nationwide through AARP.
We have also significantly increased the number of offerings – from 135 in 2023 to 257 in 2024. This growth is a testament to the effectiveness of Microsoft’s support and the dedication of T4T.
Building Capacity and Sustainability Microsoft’s support has also created a capacity-building pivot point for our organization. Our T4T staff has more than doubled to meet the growing demand. Corporate donors and private funders have also stepped up, doubling T4T’s annual support through revenue-generating partnerships and grants. Expanding Partnerships and Enhancing Programs
In 2024, T4T expanded its nonprofit partnerships, enhanced its course offerings, and developed new curriculums, particularly around AI. We also launched a new Digital Navigator program and took a project management lead role in a statewide coalition seeking a large federal grant to help Vermont create digital equity. Among the new partners is the American Connection Corps (ACC), with T4T selected as a host site for an ACC AmeriCorps member focused on the Digital Navigator programming.
Mentorship and Broader Thinking
A key element of T4T’s success is the mentorship and guidance provided by Michelle Schuler, TechSpark coach. Michelle’s role has been instrumental in shaping T4T’s broader thinking and
strategic direction. Her expertise and support continues to help T4T navigate the complexities of digital transformation and leverage Microsoft’s resources effectively.
“I am excited to witness the impact of Technology for Tomorrow in empowering communities with digital skills and AI tools. Our collaboration through the TechSpark Fellows Program is designed to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive economic opportunities through collaborative partnerships.“
— Michelle Schuler, TechSpark US Program Manager, TechSpark Fellows
Michelle’s mentorship has fostered a culture of continuous learning and innovation within T4T. By regularly checking in on T4T’s priorities and offering assistance as needed, she has ensured that the organization remains aligned with the TechSpark Ecosystem Building Framework, which includes learning, exploring, implementing, and sustaining digital initiatives. This holistic approach has empowered T4T to think bigger and bolder, driving impactful change in Vermont’s digital landscape.
